SportsEngine Registration: Prior Lake Athletics for Youth

2024 Legion Baseball Registration

Welcome

Welcome to the 2024 Legion Baseball Registration

PLHS baseball players and families, the Prior Lake Legion Baseball registration is now open!
Registration deadline: Monday April 1 at 11:59pm.

Program Overview: Prior Lake Legion Baseball (summer baseball) is a community-based program, available to all Prior Lake-Savage district residents. As of this moment, we are planning on fielding three teams for Summer 2024: a Senior Legion team, which we often simply refer to as “Legion”, traditionally made up of primarily current juniors and seniors playing at a Varsity competition level and two Junior Legion teams, made up of primarily current freshmen and sophomores playing at a 10th grade competition level. There is also the possibility of Junior Legion players being double-rostered, meaning the player would be eligible to play for both their Junior Legion teams as well as one of the Senior Legion teams, as needed throughout the season for a variety of reasons (number of players available for a particular game or tournament, injuries, to give players the experience of being around higher competition, etc.).

The teams will be selected after a single day tryout for all players on May 5. Playing high school baseball in the spring is not a requirement for trying out for Legion. (Note: Current freshman players who do not make a high school team can choose to tryout for P.L.A.Y.’s 15A team in late March if they so choose). Rosters for all teams will be announced in mid-May. Players need to choose between legion baseball or club baseball during the summer, they cannot do both. This decision was made a number of years ago after we had players missing games to go to club tournaments and pitchers unavailable to pitch because they had previously pitched for their club teams.

As a PL Grad and resident myself, I believe there is truly something special about putting on the PL with the same people you grew up playing with and the Legion program is a way we hope to continue that from the spring into the summer. We are trying to help players grow and improve on the field to win games, succeed in tournaments, go to state etc. but also build relationships and memories that will last a lifetime.

The Legion season is a chance to play the game you love alongside the players you grew up playing with, an opportunity to build on the spring season you had and/or work toward the next season, refining your skills and perhaps learning new ones.

Takuma Padilla (PLHS 10th grade coach) will be the Senior Legion ("Legion") Head Coach, Nate Sickmann (PLHS 9th grade coach) will be the Junior Legion #1 Head Coach. Other coaches are still being finalized and will be announced this spring.

Schedules are still being finalized but the tentative plan is for Senior Legion team to play approximately 20-25 regular season games, including 2 tournaments plus playoffs. The tentative plan is for both Junior Legion teams to play approximately 25-30 regular season games, including 2 tournaments plus playoffs. The majority of regular season games will be played Monday thru Thursday with the exception of the tournaments. Substate playoffs will follow the completion of the regular season (the week of July 22) with the possibility of further playoffs if we would win the Substate. Please note that the schedules are subject to change.

Senior Legion games will tentatively start June 10 and Junior Legion games will tentatively start May 28. Senior Legion games will not begin practices and games until the PLHS Varsity season ends. Junior Legion teams will not begin practices and games until the PLHS lower level (JV, 10th grade, etc.) seasons end.

The scheduled tournaments for the teams are as follows:

Senior Legion (“Legion”):

  • June 19-23 Omaha CWS Tournament
  • July 12-14 Gopher Classic Tournament

Junior Legion #1:

  • June 6-9 Burnsville Tournament
  • June 27-30 New Ulm Tournament

Junior Legion #2:

  • May 31-June 2 Apple Valley Tournament
  • June 6-9 Burnsville Tournament

Playoffs: Substate Playoffs are tentatively scheduled to be held for all teams the week of July 22. Playoffs could extend into August if we win the Substate and advance to further rounds (state, regionals (Senior Legion only), nationals (Senior Legion only). Full schedules will be shared once they are finalized and/or after teams are selected.

Cost: The total player fee for Summer 2024 will be $900. This fee covers jerseys, baseballs, tournament fees, coaches’ fees, etc. Please note that the player fee doesn't include the cost of the Omaha trip for Senior Legion players.  If cost is a concern, let us know and we will work with you. We don’t want cost to be a reason a player can’t play Legion baseball. Note: If a player tries out for the Legion program and is not placed on a team, they will be refunded.

Registration: The registration deadline is set for Monday April 1. Upon registering and paying, your name will be added to the tryout list.

Tryout date: Sunday May 5th @ Memorial Park in Prior Lake. Freshmen and Sophomores at 12:30pm, juniors and seniors at 3pm. The tryouts have traditionally lasted approximately two to two and a half hours. Please let us know if you have a conflict and we will find you another time to tryout. Rosters will be released in mid-May after all players have tried out. The method of how players can learn whether or not they were selected for a team and/or what team they were placed on will be shared with players at tryouts.

Town ball: Current seniors will be sent a separate questionnaire to gauge interest in playing town ball. Many seniors have played Legion and been rostered on either of Prior Lake’s town ball teams, the Jays and Mudcats, in years past.

If you have any questions or concerns or it has passed April 1 and you are still interested in playing Legion baseball in summer 2024, please contact Taylor Smith at tay1@me.com.
